St. Michael 8th Grade Girls White Team Wins 2011 Championship
The road to the championship started on Friday, Nov. 11, at St. Alexander, where St. Mike's defeated the Queen of Martyrs White team, winning 28-16. On Nov. 12, it was on to Marist to face the No. 1 seed and defending champions, Queen of Martyrs Blue. The St. Mike's girls never trailed in this game and eventually hung on to win 17-16, avenging a loss exactly one week earlier to this same team in the South Suburban Conference semifinals.
The championship game took place Sunday, Nov. 13, at Mother McAuley where St. Mike's faced St. Alexander. This game saw St. Mike's score the first six points and lead 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. St. Al's roared right back, however, and led at halftime 9-8. St. Al's continued their surge and led by as many as eight points late in the fourth quarter. St. Mike's scored the last 10 points of the game, winning 24-22 to take the championship title.
