ROOM 4 FIRST GRADE NEWS
(Week of February 6, 2012)
It was great seeing everyone at the Three Piggy Opera. The children worked hard and did a wonderful job! Catholic Schools Week is over, so hopefully, things can get back to "normal" in Room 4.
RELIGION:
We will discuss the scripture story of Jesus and the Fishermen and complete an activity to go along with the story. As always, we will also talk about the Gospel message in the Promise Magazine.
READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS:
In Reading, we will begin our first selection in our fourth Treasures book, "Pelican Was Hungry." We will be focusing on comprehension, main idea and details. In Phonics, we will begin working on words with the long "O" sound. In Grammar, we will discuss the uses of the verbs, "was" and "were." The next Spelling test will be on Friday, February 10.
SCIENCE
We will continue our study of the seasons by identifying the characteristics of Fall and Winter. We will also complete our seasons tree project.
MATH
We will add two digit numbers without regrouping, identify how many more on a graph, identify and make congruent shapes, and learn to count large collections and groups by 10. We will also use models to represent two digit numbers, identify place value, and compare two digit numbers. Please make sure you are checking your child's math homework. It amazes me when a parent signs the homework, and I find mistakes on the page.
OTHER
We will be doing some Valentine writing and making some Valentine animals in order to get with the season.
Thursday is our 100th day of school. Woohoo!!!!!
Parents, Friday was the 96th day of school. Due to behavior in the classroom, I have become more strict with my discipline policy. If your child receives his/her name on the board for anything, you will be hearing from me by phone call or e mail. If your child receives a check after his/her name, he/she will be coming home with a written behavior warning. Two check marks will mean a detention. By the time a name gets on the board, the child has already been verbally warned by me. Of course, for major infractions, a detention will still automatically be given. We are well on our way to second grade. I simply will not tolerate misbehavior any longer. Thank you for your understanding.
Have a wonderful week!
