McKee, Sr. Pat (Religion 5-6)
Fifth Grade
Our fifth grade students will be studying the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Anointing of the Sick. These two sacraments are called Sacraments of Healing. In the Sacrament of Reconciliation we have the opportunity to seek God's forgiveness. God is our loving Father who wants to be in daily relationship with us. Our fifth grade students have read the powerful story of the Prodigal Son and have learned no matter what we have done to offend others or our God, our heavenly Father waits lovingly and with open arms to welcome us back into His life giving relationship with Him.
We will also be studying the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Through this sacred anointing the ill person is anointed with holy oil and is prayed for his / her healing.
In the near future we will be studying the Ten Commandments. These commandments were given to us by God to help us live in good relationship with God and with one another. I would encourage all parents to review the Ten Commandments with your child (ren).
Sixth Grade
Our sixth grade students are learning about the first three kings of Israel, namely, Saul, David and Solomon. In the story of each of these three men, we learn of their relationship with our God and their failure to keep God's laws. Hopefully from them the students will gain a sense of their own relationship to their God. We also will be reviewing the Ten Commandments and some of their basic prayers.
As we enter into the holy season of Lent, may each of us ask ourselves
"What can I do for God during this holy season?" rather than asking ourselves "What can I give up this Lent?" Use this holy season to deepen your relationship/covenant with God by committing yourself:
- Spend 10 minutes each day reflecting on God's love and care for you and your family,
- Go out of your way to be helpful to all your family members,
- Do your best to be kind and compassionate towards all those you meet each day,
- Try to attend daily Mass as often as possible this Lent.
