Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Junior Great Books (JGB) FAQ
When and how often will Junior Great Books (JGB) meet?
Currently, we meet one or two Wednesdays a month from October through April. The class takes place during the students' lunch and recess periods.
Can I join anytime?
Registration takes place during August and early September to ensure we have enough time to order materials.
What is the size of the groups?
Students are placed in groups of approximately 10-12 at the same grade level. This number could change depending on the number of students that participate in a particular grade. However, our goal is to keep the number under 12 to make sure everyone is able to participate in the discussion.
How will you communicate any changes, updates or reminders?
JGB Guides communicate as much as possible via email. Because this is our first year doing Junior Great Books, we anticipate the need to make changes and updates to ensure this program is successful and the students have a great experience.
Can my student order Hot Lunch or order a hot dog on Hot Dog Day?
Yes.
What if my child is unable or struggles to read the story by him or herself?
Not a problem. Junior Great Books actually recommends that you read the story to your child the first time through. The model reading will assist the child with comprehension and understanding.
Why are we being charged $25 per student for the program?
The actual cost for the program and materials adds up to more than $25 per student. With both school and FSA support, the cost per child has been reduced to $25. (We will not turn away anyone due to financial constraints)
Why is this program under the FSA?
The Family School Association (FSA) in conjunction with several equally excited St. Michael parents have researched, planned, and implemented the running of this program. One of the roles of the FSA is to provide fun and social events for the students. The FSA board is bringing this program to our school to enhance learning while also trying to foster new friendships through a common bond with their peers. In order for this program to be successful, we need the energy that only you as parents can bring to this program. If you are excited about reading then it may be contagious and our children will become excited, too.
