5th/6th Grade Girls Soccer Champs
St. Michael School hosted the annual Southwest Catholic Soccer Association tournament last weekend at Centennial Park. The threat of rain did not dampen the participating teams' spirits, and the rain held off long enough for many teams to finish the tournament after a fun-filled day of soccer games. St. Mike's entered a combined team of 5th and 6th grade girls, and the girls played as a team so well, they went undefeated all the way to the championship.
Sheila O'Keeffe held off goal attempts with her strong defensive kicks, and goalie Nikki Schleyer kept the opposing teams scoreless. Coached by 5th grade coach Kim Sabutis and 6th grade coach Jim Makina, the SMS team saw Erin Cronin, Lauren Wille and Emily Matre score for the team. Great assistance from Gabby Stachnik, Makenzie Mishka, Maeve Hennessy and Megan Doah, as well as team members Michaela Ryan, Molly Healy, Emily Hayes, Abby Conrad, and Kate Wille, kept the team in first position throughout the tournament. The entire St. Michael team worked together to earn the championship win over St. Barnabas.
